Imagine there is a big rulebook that applies to everyone in Germany. This book is called the “Grundgesetz” or Basic Law. It’s like a treasure that helps us live together peacefully. The Basic Law makes sure everyone is treated fairly and that no one can just do whatever they want. It’s the most important rule in our country and protects our rights—no matter how long you’ve lived here.
The Basic Law has been Germany’s constitution since 1949. A constitution is a collection of very important rules for how a country works. For example, the Basic Law says: All people are equal. No one may be treated worse because of their skin color, religion, or language. This is called equality.
Another important point is freedom of opinion. This means you can say what you think, as long as you don’t insult or hurt anyone. Freedom of the press is also protected. Newspapers, TV, and the internet can report freely.
The Basic Law also sets out how the government works. There is the Bundestag, which makes laws, and the federal government, which leads the country. But no one has all the power. This is called separation of powers. It stops anyone from having too much power.
You meet the Basic Law in everyday life more often than you think. For example, when you say your opinion at school or when your family has a different religion than your friends—that’s allowed and protected. Also in sports clubs: If everyone can join, no matter where they come from, the Basic Law is at work.
The Basic Law is especially important for people with a migration background. It ensures that everyone in Germany has rights—even if they come from another country. It protects you if you need help and gives you the chance to take part.
The Basic Law is like an invisible shield for all of us. It ensures we can live together in freedom and peace. Every person in Germany—child or adult, born here or new—benefits from it. That’s why it’s important to know and respect the Basic Law. Together we can make sure these rules apply to everyone in the future.
