Guide to Democracy
Discover democracy in your city
Here you’ll learn what democracy is in Germany. You’ll also find out why we need it. There are 20 stations around the city. At these stations, we’ll explain important topics such as the Basic Law and the separation of powers. You’ll see how democracy works in your everyday life. You’ll come across it, for example, at school, in clubs or in your town.
What exactly is democracy?
Imagine a group. You want to decide together what to play. Everyone gives their opinion. Then you vote. That’s how democracy works in our country. It means that everyone has a say. In Germany, for example, people vote for politicians. They then decide on important laws in the Bundestag. Every adult is allowed to vote – no matter where they come from, what language they speak or what they believe in. That is an important value in democracy: everyone is of equal worth.
But democracy is much more than just voting. Everyone is allowed to express their opinion, as long as they respect others. This is called freedom of expression. In a democracy, there are rules for everyone. These are set out in the Basic Law. It protects our rights and ensures freedom and justice. If someone is treated unfairly, they can complain.
Democracy thrives on people getting involved. For example, you can elect a class representative at school. Or have a say in a club. Democracy is like a team game: everyone is allowed to have their say and take on responsibility. If we all get involved and listen, our democracy will remain strong.
